OXFORD — Some fans might have expected a sluggish Ole Miss football offense in its first round College Football Playoff game against Tulane.

The No. 6 seed Rebels (12-1) were playing for the first time since coach Lane Kiffin, their former offensive-minded coach, left for LSU.

New coach Pete Golding said he had no concern with offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. overseeing the offense. Ole Miss won 41-10 over No. 11 Tulane (11-3) at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Dec. 20.

Weis is one of five Ole Miss assistant coaches hired by LSU and Kiffin who is coaching the Rebels through the CFP.

“I had zero concern with Charlie Weis calling this game for this one reason: Charlie Weis cannot afford not to call a good game,” Golding said after the win. “All he heard was that it’s Lane Kiffin’s offense, it’s Lane Kiffin’s offense.

“This was his one opportunity for people to realize that Charlie Weis calls the offense, just like he’s done all year and did a great job of tonight. I had no concern on that because the last thing Charlie wanted to do was come out here and lay an egg.

“… Charlie does a great job. There was zero concern. Like I said from the very beginning, he didn’t get on that plane with any doubt that he was going to coach in this game. It starts with who he is, so he did a great job.”

The Rebels advanced to play No. 3 Georgia (12-1) in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1 (7 p.m., ESPN) in New Orleans.

The Ole Miss offense was hot to start the game, scoring touchdowns on the two first drives.

The Rebels only needed 59 seconds to score the first touchdown on a 75-yard drive with plays of 30 and 25 yards before Kewan Lacy’s 20-yard rushing touchdown. The Rebels outgained Tulane 497-421 and averaged 7.3 yards per play.

Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss completed 23 of 29 pass attempts for 282 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 43 yards and two touchdowns.

Lacy had 88 rushing yards and one touchdown despite exiting the game twice with a shoulder injury.

“It’s Charlie’s script,” quarterbacks coach Joe Judge said. “It’s Charlie’s offense. He designs it with help from all the assistants. He calls it. He does a phenomenal job of it. Charlie’s done a really great job all season calling the offense.”

Golding has hired John David Baker from East Carolina as the new offensive coordinator starting in the 2026 season.
