In 2009, the announcement of a temporarily named "Yankee Bowl" was announced by the Yankees and representatives of the Big East and Big 12 conferences, as the bowl was designed to be affiliated with each conference. The game was formally named the Pinstripe Bowl in 2010 ahead of its inaugural matchup, featuring Syracuse from the Big East and Kansas State from the Big 12. Syracuse won two of the first three Pinstripe Bowls with victories in 2010 and in 2012 (vs. West Virginia).
The Pinstripe Bowl changed its conference tie-ins in 2014 with a new contract with the Big Ten and the ACC as conference realignment changes were taking place. Among the conference changes being made saw Rutgers join the Big Ten and Syracuse join the ACC. Given the relatively local proximity and connections to both schools, it made some sense for the Pinstripe Bowl to keep those options as close to the vest as possible.
Penn State and the Pinstripe Bowl
Penn State will be playing in its second Pinstripe Bowl in 2025 when it faces Clemson. Penn State's 2014 Pinstripe Bowl came the same year the NCAA lifted sanctions, including a postseason ban, earlier in the year. The first season with head coach James Franklin ended with a fun overtime victory over Boston College. Each team scored on long touchdown plays in the first quarter with Penn State getting a 72-yard touchdown catch from Chris Godwin from Christian Hackenberg, and Boston College getting on the board momenets later with a 49-yard touchdown run by Jon Hilliman. Penn State forced overtime with a field goal from Sam Ficken in the final 20 seconds of regulation and Kyle Carter's 10-yard touchdown catch from Hackenberg gave Penn State the win with a successful PAT after Boston College missed its extra point attempt in overtime.
Clemson in the Pinstripe Bowl
Clemson has never played in the Pinstripe Bowl. This will be Clemson's first postseason bowl game, and second all-time postseason bowl game, north of the Mason-Dixon Line since facing Louisiana Tech in the 2001 Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho.

Big Ten domination in the Bronx
Since adding the Pinstripe Bowl as a bowl tie-in, the Big Ten has enjoyed plenty of success in the game. The Big Ten comes into the 2025 Pinstripe Bowl with a commanding 9-1 record overall. The only loss suffered by a Big Ten team came in 2015 when Indiana dropped an overtime thriller to Duke of the ACC, a year after Penn State won an overtime classic against Boston College.
What is not included in the Big Ten's overall Pinstripe Bowl record are two results involving Rutgers. Rutgers played in the Pinstripe Bowl twice as a member of the Big East/American before moving to the Big Ten in 2014. Rutgers won the 2011 game against Iowa State (pre-Matt Campbell) but lost in 2013 to Notre Dame. That victory by the Irish has since been officially vacated by the NCAA for academic violations by the Notre Dame program.
