Pittsburgh football quarterback Mason Heintschel busted out an epic seven-touchdown outing nearly a month ago. He and coach Pat Narduzzi took on a James Franklin-led Virginia Tech team Friday.  But the dual-threat needed to leave early amid a leg injury.

Heintschel went to the medical tent amid a right leg injury. He had gone 10-of-18 for 113 yards with one touchdown before leaving the game. Heintschel, though, settled for four carries for two yards on the ground.

Holden Geriner took over behind center for the Panthers, as they led 28-24 in the late third quarter during this battle of unbeatens in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Heintschel is questionable to return, per college football insider for On3 Pete Nakos.

Pitt already dealt with one notable injury ahead of this clash of ACC heavyweights. Running back Ja’Kyrian Turner was banged up but appeared to be ready to go out in Blacksburg. Turner responded by delivering 11 carries for 55 yards and scored one touchdown in the first half, which cut the Hokies lead to 14-7.

Pitt became down by 10 points twice, including 24-14 during the second. Heintschel, however, delivered a 22-yard touchdown to cut the lead at 24-21. Running back Damon Ferguson Jr. catapulted the Panthers ahead to 28-24 on his 15-yard rumble during the third quarter.

Both teams are unranked heading into this contest. Yet this Friday evening showdown presented both teams with a strong chance to boost their chances in landing into the ACC title game down the road. Or even impress the College Football Playoff committee too.
