Former Tennessee Vols head coach Jeremy Pruitt could soon be returning to major college football.
Pruitt, who received a six-year show cause ban for the recruiting scandal that cost him his job at Tennessee five years ago, was granted a preliminary injunction in December that prevents the NCAA from enforcing the show cause ban.
The Alabama native hasn’t coached in college football since getting fired by the Vols in early 2021. Pruitt spent the 2021 season as a senior defensive assistant with the New York Giants (former Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley, coincidentally, was the tight ends coach for the Giants in 2021).
Maryland is reportedly targeting Jeremy Pruitt
According to a report from Football Scoop’s John Brice, the Maryland Terrapins are targeting Pruitt for a role on their coaching staff.
“Several sources tell FootballScoop that Maryland and (Mike) Locksley are targeting ex-University of Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt to join the Terps defensive staff in ‘a key defensive assistant position,'” wrote Brice.
Maryland head coach Mike Locksley worked with Pruitt at Alabama in 2016 and 2017. Pruitt served as the Crimson Tide’s defensive coordinator for those two seasons. Locksley, meanwhile, was an offensive analyst in 2016 before getting promoted to co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach for the 2017 season.
Locksley has been the head coach at Maryland since 2019. He’s gone 8-16 over the last two seasons.
