Pro pipelines: 10 CFB programs that have produced the most current NFL players

NFL roster cuts changed the picture of college football talent in the league. Teams reduced their rosters to 53 players at the end of August. That made it easier to get a snapshot of which college programs have the biggest presence in the NFL.
The numbers show a clear pattern. The top programs are not only producing NFL players in large numbers. They also are sending players into some of the league’s biggest contracts.

The SEC has several schools near the top. Ohio State and Alabama lead the list with 61 active NFL players each. Georgia, LSU and Florida also rank inside the top ones. Traditional powers such as Notre Dame, Michigan, Texas and Penn State remain major sources of NFL talent.
One caveat: This list, shared by College Football Report on X, was compiled the day after NFL roster cuts. Since then, some players who were cut have latched on with another team, displacing players who may have initially made that team’s roster. Also, this list does not include players stashed on teams’ practice squads.
Player contract value also gives another view of each program’s success. As of Sept. 1, Alabama had almost $459 million in active player contract value, per Spotrac. Ohio State sat just behind it at about $456 million. Georgia and LSU also cleared $350 million.
Here’s a look at the top 10 NFL-player-producing college programs:
10. Penn State Nittany Lions
Active NFL Players: 40
The Penn State Nittany Lions have built a strong reputation for developing defensive talent.
The program has long been called “Linebacker U.” Micah Parsons remains one of its biggest defensive stars. The Green Bay Packers pass rusher has become one of the NFL’s most dangerous defenders.
Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley gives Penn State a major name on offense. Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin adds another proven playmaker.
New York Jets offensive tackle Olu Fashanu represents the younger generation from the program. Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. also gives Penn State another standout defensive player.
T-8. Oregon Ducks
Active NFL Players: 42
The Oregon Ducks have become a steady source of NFL talent. Their recruiting success continues to produce players who fit today’s fast offensive and defensive systems.
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is the biggest name from the program. Detroit Lions offensive tackle Penei Sewell has also developed into one of the league’s best players at his position.
New York Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux adds another major defensive name. Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix gives Oregon another starting-caliber quarterback in the NFL.
New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez rounds out the group’s notable active players.
T-8. Florida Gators
Active NFL Players: 42
The Florida Gators remain one of the SEC’s biggest talent producers. Their NFL players cover several positions and include some of the league’s most athletic players.
Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts leads the current group. Indianapolis Colts backup quarterback Anthony Richardson is trying to fight his way back into a starting spot.
Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson brings a physical presence to the secondary. San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall adds another young offensive talent.
Atlanta Falcons offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor gives Florida a strong representative in the trenches.
7. Michigan Wolverines
Active NFL Players: 45
The Michigan Wolverines received a recent boost from the large number of players who entered the NFL after their national championship run. The program continues to produce strong defensive players and talent in the trenches.
Detroit Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson remains the biggest current name. Dallas Cowboys edge rusher Rashan Gary is another established Michigan defender.
Houston Texans wide receiver Nico Collins has become a major offensive weapon. Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy represents Michigan’s recent quarterback pipeline.
Los Angeles Rams running back Blake Corum also gives the Wolverines another young offensive player in the NFL.

6. Texas Longhorns
Active NFL Players: 46
The Texas Longhorns continue to produce professional talent at a high rate.
Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson is one of the biggest names from the program. He has quickly established himself as one of the NFL’s most dynamic young rushers.
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy adds another explosive playmaker. Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Byron Murphy II represents a newer generation of Texas talent.
The college pipeline remains strong as well. Arch Manning continues to draw major attention as a future NFL prospect and one of the biggest names in college football.
5. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Active NFL Players: 47
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have built a particularly strong pipeline along the offensive line. Joe Alt (Los Angeles Chargers), Ronnie Stanley (Baltimore Ravens), Mike McGlinchey (Denver Broncos) and Quenton Nelson (Indianapolis Colts) are among the notable active players from the program.
Running back Jeremiyah Love of the Arizona Cardinals represents the newer generation of Notre Dame talent entering the league.
The program also has one of the strongest histories in college football. Notre Dame shares the all-time record for Pro Football Hall of Famers with USC at 14 each.
4. LSU Tigers
Active NFL Players: 49
The LSU Tigers program regularly produces players who become major NFL stars. Its current contract value also shows the quality of that talent. Active LSU players have roughly $353.7 million in contract value.
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is the biggest name in the current group. He has established himself as one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks and remains the flagship player from LSU’s modern pipeline. The receivers at his disposal during the 2019 national title season, Ja’Marr Chase of the Bengals and Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings, are among the best at their position as well. Another Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, Jayden Daniels, stars for the Washington Commanders.
On defense, cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. leads the secondary for a top-flight Houston Texans defense.
LSU’s talent production goes well beyond one position. The Tigers continue to send high-level players into the league every year.
3. Georgia Bulldogs
Active NFL Players: 57
The Georgia Bulldogs have built one of the deepest NFL pipelines in college football. Much of that success comes from the program’s ability to develop defensive talent.
Travon Walker (Jacksonville Jaguars), Jordan Davis (Philadelphia Eagles) and Jalen Carter (Eagles) are among Georgia’s major defensive names in the league. All three have also moved into major NFL contracts.
Veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford, the reigning league MVP of the Los Angeles Rams, adds another major name to the list. He has remained a high-paid NFL starter after two decades in the league.
George Pickens (Dallas Cowboys), Roquan Smith (Baltimore Ravens) and Brock Bowers (Las Vegas Raiders) give Georgia even more current star power. The program’s depth is a major reason it sits this high.
T-1. Ohio State Buckeyes
Active NFL Players: 61
The Ohio State Buckeyes have become one of the best pipelines for elite NFL talent. The program has been especially strong at the skill positions and along the edge.
Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud leads a group that also includes New Orleans Saints wide receiver Chris Olave, Washington Commanders Terry McLaurin and Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
San Francisco 49ers edge rusher Nick Bosa is another major Ohio State product. His long NFL career adds to the program’s impressive list of professional stars. Cornerback Denzel Ward of the Cleveland Browns and veteran defensive tackle Cameron Heyward of the Pittsburgh Steelers are also defensive stars.
Many players from Ohio State’s 2024 championship team have also entered the NFL. Several are already making an impact at the professional level.

T-1. Alabama Crimson Tide
Active NFL Players: 61
The Alabama Crimson Tide match Ohio State with 61 active NFL players, but their players have slightly higher total contract value.
The Crimson Tide has almost $459 million tied to active player contracts. That figure shows just how much high-end talent the program has produced.
Nick Saban’s long tenure played a major role in building that pipeline. Alabama’s NFL talent now spans several generations of players.
Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry remains one of the program’s biggest stars, along with Heisman Trophy-winning receiver DeVonta Smith of the Philadelphia Eagles. Other major names include New York Jets defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick, Denver Broncos defensive back Patrick Surtain II, Houston Texans linebacker Will Anderson and Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
Alabama has also produced three highly paid quarterbacks in Tua Tagovailoa of the Atlanta Falcons, Bryce Young of the Carolina Panthers and Jalen Hurts of the Eagles.
