Projected Final College Football Playoff Rankings After Alabama Win

Well now we know what teams are still alive for the College Football Playoff, who’s in, who’s out, and …

The College Football Playoff committee could throw us a curveball, but that’s highly unlikely.

This year’s bunch appears to despise making massive changes and swings when teams win, no matter how ugly the W appears to be.

And then there’s the big key here going forward. The committee – by its own choosing – doesn’t punish teams for losing their conference championship.

However, this could get very quirky at the end. Here’s the best guess call on what the final College Football Playoff rankings will be after Alabama slipped by Auburn to get into the SEC Championship.

What Will the Final College Football Playoff Rankings Be Now That Alabama Won?

These are the projected FINAL rankings, and not necessarily what they’ll be on Tuesday night.

12. North Texas Mean Green

Or Tulane. The winner of the American Conference Championship gets this spot, unless Duke beats Virginia in the ACC Championship.

11. Virginia Cavaliers

The Cavaliers rolled past Virginia Tech, and now they’re one win away from the CFP. But they need to beat Duke in the ACC title game. The American champion is here if the Blue Devils win in Charlotte.

10. Alabama Crimson Tide

They got by Auburn, and now it all depends on where they get ranked in the Tuesday night rankings.

If the Tide move up to the 9, or better, then they’re fine no matter what happens against Georgia in the SEC Championship. However, the committee likely won’t do that. If Bama is 10, then if it loses to the Dawgs, it’s in the CFP if Texas Tech beats BYU in the Big 12 Championship.

If BYU wins, though, then if Alabama is 10, and loses, then it’s probably out. BYU would need a spot, and Texas Tech wouldn’t be “punished” for the championship game loss.

9. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The Irish destroyed Stanford and likely won’t be moved down because of it. If the College Football Playoff committee moves Notre Dame down on Tuesday night, then this all changes.

However, if BYU wins the Big 12 and Alabama wins the SEC Championship, Notre Dame is out.

8. Oklahoma Sooners

It might have been ugly, but the Sooners got the job done by beating LSU. Oklahoma beat Alabama, so it won’t be ranked lower this week.

7. Texas A&M Aggies

The Aggies might have lost to Texas, but they won’t move any further down than this and could be at the 5 or 6. At 11-1 they’re in, and they’ll get a College Football Playoff home game. The only question will be the seed.

6. Ole Miss Rebels

This is extremely murky, because the committee could put Ole Miss 7 with the (likely, at the moment) loss of Lane Kiffin to LSU. No matter what, at 11-1, Ole Miss will get a home game in Oxford.

5. Oregon Ducks

Oregon beat a good Washington team in Seattle. It won’t move below Ole Miss, but there’s a chance it hangs at the 6 if the committee ends up putting Texas A&M here.

4. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Already at the 5 going into this week, it’ll move up to the 4 after Texas A&M’s loss. If it wins the Big 12 Championship, it’ll almost certainly get a first round bye. If it loses in the title game it will still be in – again, conference championship losers won’t be “punished.”

However, it would almost certainly get bumped out of the top four for a conference champ.

3. Georgia Bulldogs

Everything is comfortable and fine. If it wins the SEC Championship, it might be the 2, but it won’t be anything lower than the 3. If it loses, it will get a home CFP game in Athens.

2. Indiana Hoosiers

Back to that whole punishment thing, if the committee sticks to it, the Big Ten Championship loser won’t drop further than the 2, but it might be the 3 if Georgia moves up.

1. Ohio State Buckeyes

The Buckeyes got the job done against Michigan. At 12-0, it’ll get a first round College Football Playoff bye no matter what.
