Projected Final College Football Playoff Rankings After Texas A&M Loss

Everyone outside of College Station, Texas, got what it wanted on Friday night.

Fans in Athens, Georgia, and Lubbock, Texas, and Bloomington, Indiana, and several other college towns were all Longhorn fans in the 27-17 Aggie loss.

No, Texas won’t be in the College Football Playoff at 9-3, but the Longhorns will knock Texas A&M out of the top three of the next and final rankings.

It’s been a great season for the Aggies, but the high rent district of the top four will be for conference champions – and maybe one other top team – only.

So what now? Here’s a quick thought on what the final College Football Playoff rankings will be, with the call made before the massive Saturday of rivalry games (might) screw it all up.

What Will the Final College Football Playoff Rankings Be Now That Texas A&M Lost?

These are the projected FINAL rankings, and not what they’ll be on Tuesday night. (We’ll change this up on Saturday, if needed.)

12. North Texas Mean Green

It’s in the American Conference Championship, but this will be whatever team wins that conference title game next week.

11. Virginia Cavaliers

Assuming a win over Virginia Tech, but this could be SMU, or any team that wins the ACC Championship.

10. Alabama Crimson Tide

The call is that they beat Auburn, but lose to Georgia and doesn’t drop, because even at 10-3, the committee won’t “punish” a team for losing a conference title game.

9. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The committee told you what it’s going to do. The Irish will (likely) beat Stanford and be locked in. This is also assuming that Alabama doesn’t lose to Auburn, and BYU doesn’t go 12-1 with a Big 12 Championship.

8. Oklahoma Sooners

There might be some metrics that change this up, considering the loss to Texas, but the Sooners will almost certainly stay one step ahead of the Irish.

7. Texas A&M Aggies

The win over Notre Dame will get the Aggies here, but the lack of any other impressive wins – they didn’t face Georgia, Ole Miss, or Oklahoma – might drop them below the Rebels.

6. Ole Miss Rebels

Will the committee care in any way if Lane Kiffin isn’t coaching the team through the playoff? Probably not, but a consideration like that is supposed to matter. The win over Oklahoma and the lone loss coming to Georgia boost the Rebels one spot higher.

5. Oregon Ducks

The committee won’t drop the Ducks behind Ole Miss if they win at Washington.

4. Indiana Hoosiers

Assuming Ohio State beats Michigan, the one-loss Big Ten Championship runner-up goes here.

3. Texas Tech Red Raiders

The committee will (probably) reward the 12-1 Big 12 Champion with the No. 3 spot if it’s Texas Tech or BYU.

2. Georgia Bulldogs

If the Bulldogs beat Alabama in the SEC Championship, they’ll get the two.

1. Ohio State Buckeyes

The 13-0 Big Ten Champion gets the top spot as the only unbeaten team – assuming the Buckeyes don’t gack against That Team Up North.
