WEST LAFAYETTE − Purdue football‘s season came to a merciful end.
For the second year in a row, rival Indiana put Boilermaker fans out of their misery with a blowout victory for the Old Oaken Bucket.
Behind a dominant offensive line and running game in the first half, the Hoosiers essentially put Purdue away by halftime at Ross-Ade Stadium en route to a 56-3 victory.
Indiana punched its ticket to next week’s Big Ten title game.
Purdue finishes its first season under head coach Barry Odom 2-10.
Purdue football hits worst two-year stretch in 100-plus years
After going 1-11 last season, a new coaching staff improved on that mark by a single victory.
After starting 2-0, the Boilermakers ended the season with 10 straight losses. It marks the first time since 1922 and ’23 Purdue won two games or fewer in consecutive seasons.
From 1919-23, Purdue never won more than two games. All but one of those seasons were seven games, with Purdue playing eight times in 1923. The Boilermakers went a combined 8-23-3 over those five seasons, a winning percentage of .348.
Purdue’s winning percentage for 2023-24 is .125.
Purdue football gets run over. Again.
After holding up against the run through three games, Purdue allowed 254 yards on the ground at Notre Dame on Sept. 20. It remained the most against the Boilermakers until Friday.
Indiana rushed for 355 yards — the most rushing yards allowed by the Boilermakers since Notre Dame ran for 362 at Ross-Ade Stadium on Sept. 14, 2024.
The Hoosiers are the third team to rush for more than 250 yards against the Boilermakers, joining Notre Dame and Michigan (253).
Purdue football repeats winless Big Ten stretch
For the second season in a row, the Boilermakers finished with zero Big Ten victories. Purdue’s last conference win was against Indiana on Nov. 25, 2023. Purdue has lost 18 straight Big Ten games.
The Boilermakers are the first Big Ten team with consecutive winless league seasons since Rutgers in 2018 and ’19. Perhaps not coincidentally, those Rutgers teams finished 1-11 and 2-10, just like the Boilers.
