QB Jared Curtis accidentally takes out Jerry Kill in Vanderbilt football vs Auburn game

AUBURN, AL ― Quarterback Jared Curtis ran too hard and accidentally took out an assistant coach during the first quarter of Vanderbilt football's game at Auburn on Sept. 26.

Curtis scrambled for a first down to Vanderbilt's 29-yard line, then slid out of bounds, accidentally taking out Jerry Kill by the legs and causing Kill to fall to the ground, his headset falling off.

Though Curtis gained the first down on that play, the drive stalled at the Commodores' 46-yard line and resulted in a failed fake punt.

Auburn took a 14-3 lead into halftime. Only one of the touchdowns was on offense, with the Tigers' second touchdown coming on a blocked punt. The Commodores also kicked a field goal on a play that resulted from a Tigers interception.

Kill joined Vanderbilt's staff in 2023 along with offensive coordinator Tim Beck. Kill's official title is special assistant to the head coach and senior offensive assistant. Beck and Kill took a number of New Mexico State players with them to Vanderbilt, most notably Diego Pavia and Eli Stowers. One of the New Mexico State imports, Makhilyn Young, is still on the team.

Curtis, the five-star quarterback making his first SEC start, went 12-for-16 for 105 yards in the first half and ran 11 times for 31 yards. He threw an interception, but it was on a Hail Mary attempt at the end of the second quarter.
