The Michigan Wolverines missed out on a top QB2 target in the 2027 recruiting class, as three-star quarterback Thaddeus Thatcher announced his commitment to Oregon State on Friday night.
The 6-foot-2, 178-pounder plays high school football at Arbor View in Las Vegas, Nevada and has started there since his freshman year. His connection to the coaching staff predates their time in Ann Arbor, as Thatcher was originally committed to Utah when Kyle Whittingham was in Salt Lake City. When Whittingham left for Ann Arbor, Thatcher backed off his pledge to the Utes, but the relationship between him and the staff never wavered.
The new Michigan staff continued recruiting Thatcher, with quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer Jr. and offensive coordinator Jason Beck playing key roles in the pursuit. Thatcher took his first visit to Ann Arbor in early April and earned his offer on the spot. He returned for his official visit the weekend of June 19 alongside a loaded Victor’s Weekend visitor list.
In the end, however, Thatcher also took an official visit to Corvallis and likely felt the opportunity to play was better there than at Michigan.
The Wolverines entered this recruitment looking for a second quarterback to pair alongside four-star commit Kamden Lopati in the 2027 cycle. With Thatcher now off the board, Michigan faces a decision on whether to continue pursuing a QB2 or ride with Lopati as the lone quarterback in this class. The other name that had been on Michigan’s radar is three-star Khylan Davis, who is currently committed to UTSA. Whether the Wolverines make a serious push for Davis, or pivot entirely and focus resources elsewhere, will be an interesting storyline as the cycle heads toward the fall evaluation period.
