The situation around the Lane Kiffin sweepstakes figures to clear up after Friday’s Egg Bowl with Mississippi’s athletic director saying so.

There are reports of offers from LSU and Florida, and Ole Miss in hopes of keeping its coach. While the will-he-or-won’t-he makes for great headlines, the real headline for Friday’s game is if the Rebels (10-1) beat Mississippi State (5-6) for the Golden Egg Trophy, they’ll be in the hunt for another trophy: one awarded in the College Football Playoff.

Ole Miss was sixth in last Tuesday’s CFP rankings reveal and assuming they avoid a disaster in Starkville, will host a first round playoff game.

Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss says the Rebels are blocking out the noise surrounding their coach and focused on the task at hand.

“To our fans, this team is completely locked in, living in the moment, and staying true to our 1-0 mindset for the Egg Bowl and future games. We are unbothered by anything about next year and fully trusting Coach Kiffin’s leadership to keep us moving toward our goals!” Chambliss posted on social media.

Assuming Kiffin decides to jump ship, it’s still unclear what that means for him coaching in the playoff and how the committee will handle that uncertainty. Florida State got dumped for losing its QB. What will happen to a team that loses its coach?
