Colorado arrived at Baylor last week with a receiver room thinned by injuries and a passing game searching for dependable production. Quanell Farrakhan Jr. gave the Buffaloes a new answer.

The sophomore caught seven passes for 117 yards in Colorado's 23-13 loss, turning a season total of one reception through three games into his first career 100-yard performance. Farrakhan's afternoon began with a 49-yard catch on a trick play from fellow receiver Joseph Williams and continued with a key third-and-9 conversion that kept Colorado's 95-yard touchdown drive alive.

Colorado returns to Folsom Field this week to face No. 10 Texas Tech, and Farrakhan's emergence arrives at an important time. Isaac Wilson is expected to start at quarterback after replacing Julian Lewis during the second half at Baylor.

A breakout in opportunity

Farrakhan arrived at Colorado from Houston's North Shore High School as a four-star prospect, where he caught 51 passes for 958 yards and 13 touchdowns as a senior. He played in 10 games as a freshman last year and caught one pass for 17 yards.

His Baylor production came after DeAndre Moore Jr. left the game with an injury, and with Danny Scudero Jr. unavailable. Farrakhan worked the intermediate areas, tracked the deep trick-play throw, and became a reliable target when Wilson entered the game.

Williams totaled 11 catches for 127 yards and a touchdown, and the two receivers combined for 244 of Colorado's 280 passing yards at Baylor.

A larger role awaits

Texas Tech has allowed 253.5 passing yards per game, giving Colorado an opening to test the secondary. Farrakhan's ability to make catches beyond the sticks could ease some pressure on Williams and help Wilson settle into his first Colorado start.

Farrakhan also has returner experience and the acceleration to contribute in that phase, though Colorado's immediate need is to keep its new receiving threat healthy.

The sophomore has already supplied a glimpse of what he can add. Saturday offers the chance to show that Baylor was the beginning of a breakout role rather than a one-week breakout.
