R.C. Slocum statue unveiled outside Kyle Field

Last month we reported that Texas A&M was set to unveil a statue of longtime head coach R.C. Slocum outside Kyle Field, and on Friday, that moment finally came. Coach Slocum is now immortalized in bonze outside the place where he roamed the sidelines for nearly 30 years.

Slocum first came to Aggieland in 1972 as an assistant under Emory Bellard, was promoted to Defensive Coordinator under Tom Wilson (and again under Jackie Sherrill) before finally taking the reins as the head coach in 1989.

In his 14 seasons leading the Aggies, they had a 123–47–2 record, losing only 12 home games in that span. That run also included five 10-win seasons, four conference titles (three SWC, one Big 12) and ten ranked finishes. Slocum is both the longest-tenured and winningest coach in A&M history. He has also twice served as A&M’s interim athletic director (in 2019 and 2024), and is a member of the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.

His statue will now greet fans in the north plaza of Kyle Field as the Aggies begin their 2026 season against Missouri State at 6 p.m. on Saturday night.
