Quarterback Fernando Mendoza and coach Klint Kubiak finished their first preseason with the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday. Unfortunately, it ended in a defeat, as they lost to the San Francisco 49ers, 18-12, at Allegiant Stadium.
The 49ers, who fielded mostly reserves, made life difficult for Mendoza all game with their aggressive defense. The No. 1 pick went 7-of-14 for 57 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception. He was sacked twice.
The Raiders finished with a 1-2 record. It was an up-and-down campaign for Mendoza, and he will have to clean up his mistakes if he wants to get ample opportunities from Kubiak in his rookie year.

Kubiak gave an honest review of Mendoza’s first preseason, as reported by ESPN’s Ryan McFadden.
“I would love to play him the whole game, but there are other guys that we want to get looked at. I thought overall this preseason we got him plenty of time, and I’m happy where he’s at, but we just got to keep pushing to be better,” said Kubiak.
His other signal-callers, Kirk Cousins, Aidan O’Connell, and Jacob Clark, all saw action against the 49ers.
Cousins, who is expected to be the starter, is in his first year in Las Vegas as well.
In three games in his maiden preseason, Mendoza threw 25-of-45 for 240 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He was sacked four times.
The Heisman Trophy winner showed flashes of the talent that made him a blue-chip prospect, but his inconsistency in the pocket and struggles under pressure suggest he still needs development.
The Raiders will host the Miami Dolphins in Week 1.
