Ranking Florida football's hire of Jon Sumrall heading into New Year

The 2025 head coach carousel appears to have finally come to a stop after the Michigan Wolverines replaced a disgraced Sherrone Moore with former Utah Utes skipper Kyle Whittingham last week. It has been a wild cycle, no doubt, with many top-tier programs seeing major changes in their staffs.
USA TODAY Sports writer Paul Myerberg recently ranked the top 10 new hires based on projected fit and the best chance of immediate and long-term success at their new schools, with Florida’s Jon Sumrall coming in at No. 4 — behind James Franklin (Virginia Tech), Lane Kiffin (LSU) and Whittingham, respectively.
“Sumrall looks like a really good fit for Florida after four very strong years at Troy and Tulane,” Myerberg begins. “Billy Napier drew the same early reviews, though; so did Dan Mullen and Jim McElwain and Will Muschamp. Given his background on defense, Sumrall’s hire as his offensive coordinator will be key.”
According to ESPN’s recent ranking and grading of every college football hire in the 2025 cycle, Sumrall is also ranked fourth while the Gators are given an A grade — “probably the best job available, filled by the best available coach” — for his hire.
