Welcome to the Recruiting Roundup, our three-times-per-week series breaking down the latest developments on the recruiting trail for the Michigan Wolverines. We’ll keep you up to date on the top targets, the visits they take, the predictions that analysts make, and everything in between. Here’s what you need to know today…
Christian Hanshaw explains commitment to Michigan
Victors Weekend hadn’t even concluded yet by the time 2027 three-star tight end Christian Hanshaw announced his commitment to Michigan. The No. 560 overall player in his class, he cited Michigan’s combination of football tradition, academics and opportunity as the deciding factors.
“Michigan is second to none,” Hanshaw told 247Sports after committing. “You mix all that football means with the academics and the opportunity, and it’s an obvious answer. It’s a program that has proved itself with a really rick history and a lot of national championships and NFL Draft picks, and that blend was too good to pass up.”
The 6-foot-5 prospect chose Michigan over a long list of programs and gives the Wolverines another pass-catching option in the class, even though he will first step on campus in 2029 following his two-year mission trip. Hanshaw has strong ties to tight ends coach Freddie Whittingham and the Utah connections on Michigan’s staff, making this a recruitment the Wolverines quietly controlled for much of the spring.
“Historically it’s a great tight end program, and Utah became a great tight end program with what coach Freddie Whittingham Jr. and coach Kyle Whittingham did there,” Hanshaw said. “So knowing all that it’s just a great blend.
“I am super comfortable. My dad played with Freddie at BYU, so I’ve known from way before he was recruiting me. I have been around the Utah the program and even coach Jay Hill who was at BYU, so just being out there felt like you’re walking into a program you already know really well.”
Safety target remains in play
Michigan also helped itself with 2027 three-star safety Marcus Jones during Victors Weekend. Jones came away from his official visit saying he could envision himself playing in Ann Arbor, giving Michigan some momentum after Tennessee generated buzz earlier in the month.
“It was awesome,” Jones told 247Sports. “Loved getting to see the staff and get to learn more about Michigan. I could really see myself at Michigan.
“The new staff has created a great culture that makes them feel like a family. The scheme is great for safeties as they get to make plays on all levels.”
The Wolverines still have competition, with the Volunteers being the biggest threat, but getting Jones back on campus kept them squarely in the mix for one of their top remaining defensive back targets. No commitment date has been given, but it’s expected to happen in the near future.
Louis Esposito’s family knew Michigan was the right fit
Another Michigan commit offered a behind-the-scenes look at why the Wolverines continue to win some of their biggest recruiting battles.
Speaking with The Wolverine, 2027 three-star offensive lineman Louis Esposito‘s father, former Michigan defensive line coach Lou Esposito, explained the relationship Michigan built with their family was the deciding factor. Communication remained consistent throughout the process, and the family felt like more than just another recruitment.
“Seeing him in his element at Michigan, he just feels comfortable there,” Mr. Esposito said. “Coach Harding’s done a great job and coach Whitt’s done a great job and coach Bellamy has done a great job, really the whole staff. I feel like that really made him feel comfortable being at Michigan.”
Esposito has also embraced recruiting for the Wolverines since committing, helping Michigan continue building one of the nation’s top 2027 classes.
