Kansas football continues to build its relationship with one of the top in-state prospects in the 2028 recruiting class.
Lawrence native and Lawrence Free State offensive lineman Reece Wilmes returned to the Kansas campus Friday for a game-day visit, giving the Jayhawks another opportunity to strengthen their relationship with one of their top recruiting targets. According to 247Sports, Wilmes remains high on Kansas’ board as his recruitment continues to develop.
Wilmes, who is a member of the 2028 class, has already developed a strong connection with the Kansas coaching staff. The Jayhawks offered him last summer following a camp, with offensive line coach Daryl Agpalsa playing an important role in the relationship.
The visit Friday allowed Wilmes to spend more time around Agpalsa and catch up with the coach in person. That relationship appears to be one of the biggest factors keeping Kansas involved in his recruitment.
“I really like Coach A because he's straightforward with me and always keeps it real,” Wilmes told 247Sports. “We've built a good relationship throughout the process, so it was great getting to see him again on Friday and catch up in person.”
Wilmes also got the opportunity to experience the atmosphere inside David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. While he has attended Kansas games before, Friday marked his first opportunity to see the latest phase of the stadium renovations in person.
For Wilmes, the environment made an impression.
“The stadium and atmosphere were awesome,” Wilmes said. “The crowd was really into the game, and you could feel the energy throughout the stadium. It was definitely a great environment to be around.”
The visit is another positive development for Kansas, especially considering Wilmes’ connection to the area. Growing up in Lawrence and attending Free State gives the Jayhawks a natural connection with the four-star-level offensive line prospect.
However, Kansas is far from the only program involved. Wilmes has attracted significant attention nationally, with programs such as Clemson, Nebraska, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Indiana, Penn State, Ohio State, Oregon and others showing interest or extending offers.
Wilmes’ recruitment is still in its early stages because he is only a 2028 prospect. That means there is plenty of time for his recruitment to change as more schools become involved and he takes additional visits.
For now, though, Kansas has established itself as an important part of the process. The Jayhawks already have an offer out, Wilmes has continued to return to campus, and his relationship with Agpalsa remains strong.
With another successful visit in the books, Kansas will continue working to keep the Lawrence native close to home as his recruitment moves forward.
