Defensive backs coach Reggie Howard was named Memphis football’s interim coach, the school announced Nov. 30.

Howard replaces Ryan Silverfield, who left to become coach of Arkansas. He’s been on the Memphis staff since 2024 and was inducted into the M Club Hall of Fame earlier this year.

The Tigers (8-4, 4-4 American Conference) missed out on the conference title game for the sixth straight season but will play in a bowl game.

Howard is a Memphis alum who played for the Tigers before beginning his NFL career in 2000. He was an undrafted free agent but played in the NFL until 2006 and had an interception in the 2004 Super Bowl for the Carolina Panthers.

He’d spent multiple stints on the Memphis staff before joining Silverfield’s defensive staff ahead of the 2024 season. He spent 2023 as a defensive quality control coach with the Washington Commanders.

The Tigers will likely learn their bowl destination on Dec. 7, after the College Football Playoff bracket has been announced.
