With the unwritten rule being that if you call plays for the Eagles, you’ll land a head coaching gig, coordinator candidates could be lining up for their opportunity after Kevin Patullo was removed as the team’s offensive coordinator.

Patullo could still remain on staff, but his time as the play caller has ended.

Philadelphia’s fifth-year head coach has far exceeded expectations, but it’s clear that high-level assistant coaches have played far more significant roles than we thought. Sirianni rightfully gets a lot of credit for the Eagles’ success, which means he’s to blame when things don’t work out, or a specific unit isn’t operating at maximum potential. In 2023, after a late-season meltdown that saw the Eagles go 1-6 in their final seven games, including the playoffs, the head coach and his assistant coaches were placed squarely on the hot seat, with Sirianni the only coach to survive. In came Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio, and a Super Bowl followed in 2024.

This cycle will see Brian Daboll and Mike McDaniel as the favorites, but one young, hot spot college player caller could be a coach to watch. Pat Leoanard of the New York Daily News reports that Ole Miss OC Charlie Weis Jr.’s name has come up a lot in this cycle, and the Eagles have inquired.

Weis Jr. joined the Ole Miss coaching staff in 2022 and currently serves as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Rebels.

Weis Jr.’s Rebel offense took a hatchet to the Ole Miss record books in 2024, which ended with program records in total offense (6,845), yards per play (7.3), passing yards (4,561), and passing yards per game (350.8). Ole Miss’ passing offense was among the best in the nation, leading the FBS in passing efficiency (176.6) while also leading the SEC in total offense (526.5 ypg, FBS No. 2), passing offense (350.8 ypg, FBS No. 2), scoring offense (38.6 ppg, FBS No. 3), yards per completion (15.5, FBS No. 4) and completion percentage (68.0, FBS No. 8). For his efforts, Weis Jr. won the Graphite Award for best SEC Offensive Playcaller.

Weis helped develop New York Giants first-round pick Jaxson Dart, and he turned Trinidad Chambliss into a potential first-round pick while overseeing the Rebels’ top-ranked offense in 2025.

Weis Jr. is used to chaos after he joined Lane Kiffin at LSU, but also stayed with Ole Miss as the offensive play caller through the College Football Playoff.
