Florida appears set to make a change at quarterback for Saturday's trip to Texas.
On3's Pete Nakos reported Friday that the Gators are expected to start Tramell Jones, with Aaron Philo continuing to work through a shoulder injury. Jones took first-team reps throughout the week while Philo was limited, although Nakos reported that a final decision will not be made until Saturday morning.
If Jones gets the nod, it would be his first college start.
The sophomore quarterback has appeared in five games this season, completing 23 of 29 passes for 252 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. His 79.3% completion rate has come mostly in second-half and reserve work.
Florida coach Jon Sumrall made it clear earlier this week that the staff has confidence in Jones if Philo is unavailable.
“Tramell got reps in practice. He’s going to continue to get reps,” Sumrall said. “I’ve said this publicly: I think Tramell can be our starting quarterback here, and we can win football games.”
Philo has been listed as questionable on the SEC injury report this week and was already expected to be a game-time decision. The Georgia Tech transfer has passed for 1,341 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions this season.
Jones chose to stay at Florida after Sumrall was hired rather than enter the transfer portal, and Sumrall has repeatedly praised how he has handled his role behind Philo.
“Tramell is gonna be ready when his number is called,” Sumrall said. “I love the way he’s handled himself. Tramell’s been great. Philo’s been great.”
Florida and Texas kick off at noon Saturday on ABC.
