Report: Florida football expected to hire special teams analyst

It appears the Florida football program is set to add another coach to its staff.

According to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, the Gators are expected to hire Greg McMahon as a special teams analyst.

McMahon has been coaching for more than four decades and has extensive experience with special teams. He was the special teams coordinator for the Illinois Fighting Illini from 1997-04 and has also held the same role with the UNLV Rebels, East Carolina Pirates, Tulane Green Wave, LSU Tigers, etc.

McMahon was also the special teams coordinator for the NFL’s New Orleans Saints from 2008-16.

A new era at Florida

The 2026 season will be Jon Sumrall’s first season as the Gators’ head coach after they hired him away from the Green Wave at the end of November. Sumrall spent the last two seasons as the Green Wave’s head coach and led them to the College Football Playoff this past season.

Sumrall finished his Green Wave tenure with a 20-8 record. He also coached the Troy Trojans for two seasons, compiling a 23-4 overall record.

His job is to bring the Gators back to relevance after another disappointing 2025 season that saw them finish with a 4-8 record. The 2025 season also saw the end of the Billy Napier era when the Gators fired him seven games into the season. Napier was the head coach for about three and a half seasons, compiling a 22-23 record.

Sumrall’s first game as the Gators’ head coach will be on Sept. 5 against the Florida Atlantic Owls. His first game against an SEC school will be on Sept. 19 against the Auburn Tigers.
