Former Notre Dame Fighting Irish head coach Lou Holtz is in hospice, according to reports.

The 89-year-old Holtz led the Irish to an undefeated season in 1988. That season culminated in a national championship.

Holtz coached the Irish from 1986 to 1996 before retiring. He spent a couple of years as a television analyst for CBS before coming out of retirement to helm the South Carolina Gamecocks.

The Irish were struggling when Holtz took over, and two years later, they were champs.

Before coming to Notre Dame, Holtz coached for William & Mary, North Carolina State, the NFL’s New York Jets, Arkansas and Minnesota.

Holtz worked for ESPN after leaving South Carolina, and he was seen giving current head coach Marcus Freeman advice in the first season of the documentary “Here Come The Irish.”

We’re wishing all the best for Holtz and his family.
