The Oklahoma Sooners are off to a fantastic start on the recruiting trail. Oklahoma has put together a class that is ranked in the top six on most recruiting sites.
It's a large class for Oklahoma. Head coach Brent Venables has earned commitments from 26 prospects so far. That includes commitments from three five-stars: offensive tackle Kaeden Penny, offensive tackle Cooper Hackett, and cornerback Gabriel Osborne Jr. Those three serve as the foundation of the class and are all in-state prospects from Oklahoma.
While those players draw most of the attention, Oklahoma has also been highly effective in recruiting outside the state. The Sooners have commitments from players from Kentucky, Utah, California, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Arizona, Kansas, and Missouri.
Rivals recruiting expert Chad Simmons talked about this recruiting strategy.
"So, they're not just going in the, you know, Midwest or the Midland area out there, Oklahoma and Texas and all that,” Simmons said. “They're going into the South to go against SEC programs to land talent as well."
This reflects a shift in recruiting strategy. In the past, success was heavily tied to dominating your local recruiting footprint. Now, you can find players from everywhere, as is evident with Oklahoma's class. The best classes in the country are able to recruit from all over. It also helps when you have a national brand as Oklahoma does.
Modern recruiting requires a national approach, and Oklahoma's class reflects that reality. By combining elite in-state talent with commitments from across the country, the Sooners are positioning themselves to compete with any program in the nation on the recruiting trail. That national reach is a key reason why Oklahoma's class is already viewed as one of the best in the country.
