Riverdale football defensive back Hudson Fuqua has spent a lot of time in Starkville, Mississippi, over the past few months.

And he decided he wants to spent a lot more time there in the future. Fuqua committed to Mississippi State on Nov. 6.

“I feel like they have a very good team,” Fuqua said. “The campus is very engaging to football. The stadium atmosphere is very alive, very amazing.”

The 6-foot, 185-pound Fuqua also has offers from Indiana, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss and Virginia Tech, among others, according to 247Sports, which doesn’t have a ranking for him.

Fuqua said his relationships with the Bulldogs coaching staff was a big factor in his decision.

“I’ve had a great relationship with (coach Jeff Lebby) and (co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach) Matt Barnes,” Fuqua said. “What really impresses me is how they’ve treated my family. They’ve been 100% honest with me, including how they see my role on the team.”

According to 247Sports, Mississippi State offered Fuqua in January. He visited the school in April and have made three game visits during the season, including most recently Oct. 25 when the Bulldogs played Texas. Lebby has also visited Fuqua at Riverdale.

He is the second area junior to commit to an SEC school over the past week, joining Siegel offensive lineman Princeton Uwaifo to Tennessee.

Fuqua leads Riverdale with 79 tackles (four for loss) while adding two interceptions and two forced fumbles.

The Warriors are 7-3 and are a No. 3 seed entering the TSSAA football Class 6A playoffs, where they will travel to Lebanon Nov. 7 in the first round.

Fuqua was the Region 3-6A co-defensive back of the year in 2024 with 3-6A with 78 tackles, three pass deflections and a caused fumble. He was also a first-team all-area performer.

Fuqua has another visit scheduled for Mississippi State’s game against Georgia Nov. 8. He said he also plans to take visits to Vanderbilt and Memphis.

“In my heart I feel like this is pretty firm,” Fuqua said about his commitment. “But I am still open to other schools.”
