Rumors Swirl Around the Ohio State Buckeyes As the Transfer Portal Begins to Take Shape

The first college football transfer portal window opens up on New Year's Day, January 1st, 2026, and the Ohio State Buckeyes are going to be active.

This is not a story about how horrible the college football schedule is, but it is a story about how the Buckeyes, while in the midst of trying to repeat as the National Champions, will need to be active in the transfer portal window.

The Buckeyes got two pieces of news about their future roster on Thursday. The first came from inside their own walls when it was announced that Junior wide receiver Bryson Rodgers was hitting the portal.

Rodgers had his first real chance to make a name for himself this year when Carnell Tate went down, and it never came to fruition. He was quickly passed over, and the writing was on the wall when the Buckeyes played Rutgers, and wide receiver David Adolph was the first receiver on the field.

In Rodgers' career in Columbus he notched just 11 catches for 124 yards and one touchdown. That score came this year against the UCLA Bruins. Rodgers, a native of Tampa, Florida can now choose wherever he wants to continue his college career.

You can connect the dots yourself.

On the positive side, the Buckeyes are being rumored to maybe the most coveted player available in this portal window.

Penn State defensive end Chaz Coleman has made the decision to hit the portal and end his time in Happy Valley. Where does the 6'5 edge rusher call home? If you guessed Ohio, you would be right.

Coleman is a native of Youngstown and attended Warren G Harding High School before heading to Penn State. As a true freshman, Coleman found his way onto the field immediately and made a minimal impact.

I nine games he tallied eight tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack.

He was recruited heavily by the Buckeyes coming out of high school, but ultimately decided to go to Penn State. Once James Franklin was fired, he decided to find a new home.

Several folks, especially those who follow the Penn State program closely, expect him to be a Buckeye.

This is just the beginning of what is the wild west in College Football. The transfer portal, the one-year free agency will be in full effect in just a couple of weeks.

Ohio State will have several holes to fill in its 2026 roster, and it will have to do it while trying to win the 2025 National Championship.

If that sounds insane its because it is.
