Rutgers received a major boost on the depth chart this weekend.

Defensive lineman Zaire Angoy received approval for a sixth year of eligibility in 2026. He petitioned the NCAA for an extra year due to a redshirt used in 2021.

Angoy has been practicing with the team but did not hear until recently that his request was granted. Greg Schiano shared the news during a recent press conference and spoke about his feelings during the process.

“I was starting to sweat, because he’s been practicing the whole spring, but I didn’t have confirmation,” Schiano said. “It’s legal for him to do that. But I don’t have confirmation that he’s going to be cleared for the fall. And literally, we just got it the other day. And to see the joy on his face and the weight come off his shoulders, those are some of the little rewarding things you get as a head coach. You don’t get a lot of them, but that was fun. And I went to find him.
As soon as I found out, I hunted him down in the hallway. It was cool.”

Angoy has improved each year at Rutgers since being recruited as part of the Class of 2025. He started 11 games at defensive tackle last season and will be in the mix to battle for a spot once again. Angoy has played in 25 games over the last two years.
