Rutgers Football adds 2027 Florida safety Zion Watson

It was a busy weekend of recruiting for Rutgers and it all came to Sunday.

The Scarlet Knights landed three-star safety Zion Watson out of Northside Christian in Florida.

Watson held other offers from Army, Navy, UNLV, and Samford.

The 6-foot-2 defensive back is listed as an athlete in the 2027 class but has the ability to play both safety and corner. He is also a standout track runner excelling in the 4×100 relay. Watson is known for his length and speed in the defensive backfield.

Watson built a connection with defensive coordinator Travis Johansen and this led to his commitment. Rutgers first offered the safety in April. Watson was on campus this weekend and this gave him the chance to meet with the coaching staff once again to visit the facilities and discuss his goals.

Watson’s athleticism helped him star on the offensive side of the ball in high school as well. He caught 45 passes for 1,036 yards and 11 touchdowns last season.

Watson is the first commitment in the 2027 class from Florida, which is an area that Greg Schiano has focused on in recent years. He is the fourth commitment of the day for Rutgers. Watson is also the fourth defensive player in the class joining defensive end Josiah Sturdivant, safety Trent Buttles, and linebacker Moses Poku-Kankam.
