Rutgers is set to kick off the 2026 season in less than two weeks and to no one’s surprise, the Scarlet Knights have not named a starting quarterback.

On Saturday, the team completed the second and final scrimmage of training camp. Schiano spoke to the media following the session where he spoke once again on the ongoing quarterback battle.

A decision has not been made yet but it could be coming “soon.”

“I don’t know exactly what day,” Schiano said. “I got enough deadlines, I don’t want to put any on myself, but it’ll be soon. Kirk and I will sit down after we watch [tape], but it’s more a conversation than one tape. Today wasn’t that much tape. It’s just looking at the total body of work, what we think is right. Like I said last week, we have two good choices and I’m very confident in both of them, so just gotta make them.”

The battle has been between AJ Surace and Boston College transfer Dylan Lonergan battling it out to see who will replace Kaliakmanis.

Surace is entering his third year within the program while this will be Lonergan’s third stop. He began at Alabama, where he spent two years, before playing 10 games for Boston College in 2025. He finished with 2,025 passing yards with 12 touchdowns and five interceptions.

“The quarterback deal, I think they’re similar quarterbacks and that’s what’s made it challenging to make a decision,” Schiano said. “They both bring great skill sets to the position. Great mentality, maturity, leadership. They really are two really good college quarterbacks, so we just got make a decision.”

Schiano shared that he will be naming a starting quarterback but will not share other positions until the lineup is made public.

Offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca has been involved heavily in the discussion on who should start under center. Schiano reiterated that he will make the final decision but that he is on the same page as his coordinator.

“It’s not like we’re starting a conversation,” Schiano said. “Things go with ebbs and flows, but we’ll just confirm what we both believe. He spends a lot more time with them than I do and he’s the expert on that. Ultimately, I have to make the decision, but he and I are on the same page. I don’t think it’s going to be an issue.”
