Rutgers Football Hires Former LA Chargers Assistant Coach Jeff Carpenter

Rutgers football has added another assistant coach with NFL experience this offseason, as they have hired former Los Angeles Chargers quality control coach Jeff Carpenter to be an offensive assistant, according to Chrise Iseman of USA Today. Carpenter and current Scarlet Knights offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca have experience working together, as Carpenter was a graduate assistant at Penn State in 2020 under Ciarrocca. He is expected to coach right alongside him, primarily working with the quarterback room.

Carpenter spent the last two seasons with the Chargers, working as a quality control coach with the wide receivers in 2024 and as a quality control coach for the tight ends in 2025. He was also a quality control coach for the Houston Texans in 2015.

In addition to his time as an undergraduate/graduate assistant at Penn State, Carpenter has spent time with several different teams at the college level as well. His most recent college role was at Virginia Tech in 2022-2023, where he was an offensive analyst. His other roles include being an offensive analyst for LSU in 2021, a quality control coach for Penn State in 2018-19, the Quarterbacks coach for Bryant in 2017, and a quality control coach at Princeton in 2016.

During his time with the Chargers, Carpenter is credited with helping to develop rookie wide receiver Ladd McConkey, who set several franchise rookie records in 2024 when he hauled in 82 passes for 1,149 and seven touchdowns.

Carpenter is the third coach the Knights have brought in this off-season with NFL experience on the offensive side of the ball, as they have also hired offensive line coach Jim Turner and assistant wide receiver coach Mike Sullivan, who both have made several NFL stops during their coaching careers.

Carpenter is a native of the northeast, having grown up in Massachusetts.
