After having a bye week last Saturday, Rutgers football will return to action this weekend as it is set to make the trip down to College Park to play Maryland. The Terrapins, on the other hand, will be coming into this game after suffering a 45-16 loss at the hands of No.5 Ohio State in Columbus. This game will also serve as the homecoming game for Maryland.
Neither squad had a good game their last time out, as both were matched up against the two best teams in the conference, with Rutgers losing 47-15 to then No.6 Indiana. Last game, Maryland quarterback Malik Washington went 12 for 25 passes for 64 yards, while adding five rushes for 19 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Rutgers quarterback Dylan Lonergan completed five out of 10 passes for 67 yards before being taken out of the game due to injury. (Schiano confirmed he will be the starter for this game)
Rutgers running back Antwan Raymond struggled to get anything going against Indiana as well, recording 11 rushes for just 31 yards. The same was true for DeJuan Williams, who recorded 16 rushes for 48 yards. Maryland’s top receiver against Ohio State was Chris Durr Jr., who recorded four catches for 15 yards. Durr Jr. has 476 yards on 46 catches as well as four touchdowns for the season. KJ Duff once again led Rutgers in receiving, recording four catches for 78 yards. Duff has 628 yards and seven touchdowns on 33 catches this season.
Both defenses had rough outings last week, with both surrendering at least 400 yards and 40 points to their opponent.
Rutgers opened as 4.5-point underdogs against Maryland, in a game where many fans believe it’s the Knights’ best chance to win a Big Ten game all season. (Aside from maybe Michigan State) One way or another, one team is going to be walking out of this game with their first Big Ten win of the season. Despite it likely being to little, to late, it will be interesting to see what adjustments Rutgers has made in the bye week, especially on the defensive side of the ball. That extra week to plan could prove vital in this matchup.
Rutgers vs Maryland will take place on Saturday, October 17 at 12:30 p.m. inside SECU Stadium in College Park, MD. Live coverage for the game will be available on Big Ten Plus.
