SBN Reacts: Mizzou fans split on more CFP expansion

It’s the conversation that never goes away. How many teams should be in the College Football Playoff? Four? Eight? Twelve? Sixteen? Sixty-four? One-hundred-thirty-eight? Who wouldn’t love to see a first round matchup between Ohio State and Charlotte?

Since its introduction, the College Football Playoff has taken on a life of its own as this behemoth entity that the college football world centers around, its discourse taking on a more structured (yet equally befuddling) core: Which teams deserve to play?

We’ve been party to a lot of talk about further CFP expansion this year, with the SEC and Big 10 a little more hesitant to stretch the numbers than, say, non-Power Two conferences like the Big 12 and the Atlantic Coast. But that’s not the case across the board. Our own Eli Drinkwitz, for instance, wants at least 30 teams to be a part of the field, presumably because it would mean Mizzou is an annual contender.

But do Mizzou fans agree? According to this week’s Reacts results… not exactly!

I see this as a market of interest in the fidelity of the sport as a whole rather than an indictment of Mizzou’s place in it. And I largely agree with that sentiment. I think the 12-team field is a nice balance between wanting to see the best-of-the-best and also leave room for underdogs to make the field. It’s also reasonable for me, as a Mizzou fan, to expect that the Tigers will eventually play their way into the field. So I share the skepticism. If this were basketball, and the players could play every few days without compromising the quality of the game, sure maybe we can talk expansion. But does anyone really want to see half of the college football season played in a win-or-go-home format? No thanks!

So do you think CFP expansion will happen (again) at any point soon. I’m sure you could find a way to bet on it at FanDuel!
