Texas A&M made it to the playoffs for the first time in 2025, led by head coach Mike Elko and quarterback Marcel Reed. It was a breakout season for Reed, as he passed for over 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns. Elko also believes Reed can be even better in 2026.

Now, Elko is speaking out about his quarterback and his goals for the 2026 campaign, per Adam Rittenberg of ESPN.

“His goal is to lead this team to a championship and be an NFL draft pick,” Elko told ESPN. “He’s very, very comfortable with where we’re at right now with the scheme stuff. Last offseason, I was dealing with people asking me if he would be able to complete a forward pass, and I tried to convince everyone that he would, and now there’s a thought that he’s hit his ceiling, but I still think there’s a ton of growth for him, and he’s committed to doing that.”

Still, there are a lot of questions about Reed heading into this season. He will need to find another top receiving target now that KC Concepcion is in the NFL. He also needs to rebound from a bad two games at the end of the 2026 campaign. In the final two games, he passed for just 417 yards and ran for another 98. He also threw four interceptions while being sacked eight times, and did not account for a touchdown.

“The people that have been able to stop the run and play zone defense, he’s had a hard time against,” an SEC defensive coordinator said.

Another coordinator noted that Reed needs to be willing to use his legs more in 2026.

“He still thinks he’s a true quarterback, and we want him to, like, keep thinking that way. He doesn’t really want to run, but when he does, it’s the scariest part,” the coordinator said.

Texas A&M will be competing for a playoff spot again in 2026. The Aggies open their season on September 5, hosting Missouri State.
