When the Missouri Tigers kick off against Arkansas Pine Bluff in a weeks time, the SEC College Football season officially kicks off.
All 16 teams are in action during the opening Week 1. But only two of the 16 games have a point spread under 10 points. So the “interesting games” are only LSU-Clemson and Auburn-Baylor. The next closest spread is Kentucky over Youngstown State by 23.5.
But early point spreads aren’t a very good indicator of who might be contenders for the SEC Conference Championship. If you follow Vegas odds, the Sportsbook by Fanduel provided the ones we’re using today, so here they are:

- Oklahoma +850
- Alabama +900
- LSU +900
- Ole Miss +1,000
- Texas A&M +1,100
- Tennessee +1,800

There appear to be two very clear favorites with Georgia and Texas. Then the next tier of Oklahoma, Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M.
Tennessee, Florida, Missouri, South Carolina and Auburn are in the next tier. Vanderbilt is awarded the king of (expletive) mountain. And sorry, Hawg fans.
Missouri’s 10th best odds are better than they were a year ago. But still a ways behind the considered contenders.
One of the questions posed to us from the SBN folks was asking about a Darkhorse to win the league. But a Darkhorse team so rarely wins the league. I looked back at previous winners over the years and I think Missouri making the Championship games in 2013 and 2014 is about as close as you get. But neither team won.

- 2020: COVID year so no preseason Media poll, but the preseason AP Poll was #3 Alabama who beat #8 Florida
- 2019: LSU (W#2) beat Georgia (E #1)
- 2018: Alabama (W#1) beat Georgia (E #1)
- 2017: Georgia (E #1) beat Auburn (W #2)
- 2016: Alabama (W #1) beat Florida (E #2)
- 2015: Alabama (W #1) beat Florida (E #5)
- 2014: Alabama (W #1) beat Missouri (E #4)
- 2013: Auburn (W #5) beat Missouri (E #6)
- 2012: Alabama (W #2) beat Georgia (E #1)

You have to go back to 2013 to find the last time a darkhorse won the SEC, and that team beat another darkhorse in the championship game In the other three games where a darkhorse made the championship game they lost by an average of three touchdowns.
