On Monday, a judge granted Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby a temporary injunction against the NCAA that will allow him to play during the 2026 season despite admitting to thousands of bets on sports, 40 of which were on his own team. The decision quickly sparked outrage, and some teams are now flatly refusing to play against Texas Tech as a result.

In the aftermath of the ruling, several athletic directors and conference commissioners have spoken out against the decision, and at least one team has sent an internal memo indicating that it will not schedule contests against Texas Tech in any sport for the foreseeable future.

Decision Sparks Outrage

Following Monday’s decision, high-ranking officials across college football have expressed their outrage.

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips told ESPN the ruling represents a “horrendous pattern” that is “eroding the integrity of our process.” The Big Ten, meanwhile, is expected to hold conversations about a possible league-wide mandate to not schedule Texas Tech in any sports during the regular season. Even schools in the Big 12, where Texas Tech plays, have been discussing the possibility of refusing to play against Texas Tech.

TCU athletic director Mike Buddie and Kansas State AD Gene Taylor both told ESPN that there has been talk of refusing to play games against Texas Tech.

“We anticipate having conversations surrounding it,” Buddie told ESPN. “We’re all anticipating it, but this has not been formally discussed.”

Georgia Refuses to Play Texas Tech

While there has been a lot of talk about the possibility of refusing to play against Texas Tech, the University of Georgia already sent an internal memo indicating that it will no longer schedule any contests against Texas Tech.

“Based on recent developments, Georgia Athletics will not schedule future contests against Texas Tech until further notice,” the email read via Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports. “Please review your sport’s current schedules and future scheduling plans. If you have any contests currently scheduled against Texas Tech, or are actively engaged in scheduling discussions with Texas Tech, please notify your sport administrator as soon as possible so we can evaluate the situation and determine next steps.

“Effective immediately, no new contests should be scheduled against Texas Tech without prior approval from the Athletics Department,” the message continued. “If you have any questions, please let me know.”

Nebraska has sent a similar message throughout its program, and it’s likely that Georgia and Nebraska won’t be the last.
