Frank Wilson built a reputation as one of the top recruiters in college football over the last 15 years. In two stints at LSU football, Wilson led the recruitment of impact players on both sides of the ball.

Wilson’s second LSU tenure is coming to an end. Wilson took over as interim head coach after the firing of Brian Kelly, but was not part of new LSU head coach Lane Kiffin’s plans. Wilson will coach LSU vs. Houston in the Kinder’s Texas Bowl — then he’s off to Ole Miss to join Pete Golding’s staff.

Ole Miss is where Wilson began his collegiate coaching career. He’s worked with Golding before, as Golding was Wilson’s DC when Wilson was the head coach of UTSA. Ole Miss is counting on Wilson to be a recruiting ace, giving the Rebels a presence in New Orleans.

Before Wilson officially leaves LSU, we’ll take a look at the top-ranked recruits he brought to Baton Rouge.

Rankings are via247Sports composite ratings.

10. Linebacker Clifton Garrett

Garrett signed with LSU in 2014 out of Illinois. He was a five-star recruit and ranked as the No. 2 outside linebacker in the class, according to 247Sports. Despite the talent, Garrett wasn’t long for LSU. He spent one year with the Tigers, played in three games, and left the team in the Summer of 2015.

9. Defensive tackle Richard Anderson

Anderson signed with LSU earlier this month. There was intrigue in the final hours of Anderson’s recruitment with uncertainty surrounding Wilson’s future. Wilson was a key reason Anderson committed to LSU and by signing day, there was a feeling Wilson was on his way out. That led some to wonder if Anderson would wait to sign. Kiffin and staff got it over the finish line.

8. Wide receiver Jarvis Landry

Landry, a five-star wide receiver, signed with LSU in 2011. He spent three years at LSU before declaring for the NFL Draft. He left LSU as one of the most productive players in program history. He was a reception machine, catching 137 passes. Landry put up big numbers, despite sharing targets with Odell Beckham and playing on run-heavy LSU teams.

7. Wide receiver Malachi Dupre

Dupre is one of the top-ranked wide receiver signees in LSU history. A five-star out of New Orleans, he was a member of the star-studded 2014 recruiting class. Dupre didn’t put up big numbers in Baton Rouge, but some of that had to do with the dysfunction of the offense and not Dupre, who still came up with some big catches in his career.

6. Running back Harlem Berry

Wilson signed a handful of blue-chip running backs, Berry being the most recent. Berry signed with LSU in 2025 as a five-star out of New Orleans. Some recruiting services saw Berry as the best running back in the class. His talent flashed as a true freshman and now LSU will hope to keep Berry out of the transfer portal with Wilson heading to Oxford.

5. Defensive tackle Dominick McKinley

As we’ve seen, Wilson’s recruiting acumen isn’t limited to the offensive side of the ball. In 2024, he was key in LSU signing five-star defensive tackle Dominick McKinley.

McKinley was trending to Texas A&M for much of his recruitment, but after the Aggies fired Jimbo Fisher, LSU made a strong push to land the Louisiana native. McKinley flipped to the Tigers on New Years Eve and signed with LSU a month later. McKinley just finished his second year with the program and has proven to be an impact player. LSU will want to make sure he sticks around.

4. Linebacker Harold Perkins

Perkins was the crown jewel of Brian Kelly’s first LSU signing class. Wilson was hired days before the early signing period began. One of his first jobs — get Perkins to sign with LSU. Perkins, a five-star linebacker, played high school football in Texas but was originally from New Orleans. LSU has signed a handful of players who had to relocate from New Orleans to Texas over the year, and Perkins was another one the Tigers convinced to come home.

Perkins just finished year four with LSU and is off to the NFL. He was a polarizing figure, taking the SEC by storm as a pass rusher as a true freshman, but struggling to settle in 2023 and 2024. In 2025, LSU moved Perkins to the STAR position, and he had his best season since 2022.

3. Defensive tackle Anthony Johnson

Anthony Johnson, a five-star from O. Perry Walker High School in New Orleans, was one of the best defensive linemen of the Les Miles era at LSU. He was a force on the interior and a key piece on some of the nation’s top defenses. After leaving LSU, Johnson spent four years in the NFL.

2. Defensive lineman Lamar Brown

Brown is the second 2025 signee to make the list, joining Richard Anderson. Brown played high school ball at U-High, right on LSU’s campus. Still, it was a battle to land the No. 1-ranked recruit in the nation. Texas A&M and Texas both fought hard.

Wilson spearheaded Brown’s recruitment and earned his commitment in July. As the early signing period approached, questions arose about Brown, given Wilson’s uncertainty regarding the staff. Just as LSU did with Anderson, Kiffin got Brown’s signature.

1. Running back Leonard Fournette

Fournette will go down as the best player Wilson coached at LSU. The five-star running back from New Orleans was ranked as the top overall player in the country. He was a true “can’t-miss” prospect for the Tigers.

Wilson got Fournette to Baton Rouge and the talent was obvious. In 2015, Fournette had one of the best seasons we’ve ever seen from a LSU running back. After LSU, Fournette went on to have a lengthy NFL career.
