Offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki is returning to the home of his stellar pre-Penn State football success.
The Penn State assistant known for his creative playcalling − and his up-and-down success rates − is re-joining Kansas and longtime boss Lance Leipold, the university announced Jan. 2.
Kotelnicki, 45, will be the Jayhawks’ associate head coach after leading Penn State’s offense for two seasons. He was not retained by new Nittany Lion head coach Matt Campbell.
The Lions’ offense will now be led by Campbell’s longtime assistant at Iowa State, Taylor Mouser.
Kotelnicki, meanwhile, returns to Kansas and Leipold, under whom he worked for 11 seasons with KU (2021-23), Buffalo (2015-20) and Wisconsin-Whitewater (2013-14). His Kansas offenses were two of the three highest-scoring attacks in program history, including its 35.6 points-per-game average in 2022.
Kotelnicki was named the nation’s top offensive coordinator in 2023 by 247Sports after his offense ranked seventh in the country in yards per completion (14.8) and eighth in rushing, yards per play and explosive play percentage.
It was surprising, then, that his Penn State offense struggled so thoroughly at times in 2025, particularly during a 3-6 start. Despite quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer’s steady improvement, the PSU pass game ranked only 103rd nationally (187.6 yards per game).
Kotelnicki’s balanced attack in 2024, which led to two College Football Playoff victories, featured the running of co-starting tailbacks Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton and do-it-all tight end Tyler Warren.
Kotelnick is the latest Penn State assistant to find a new job. The others include offensive coaches Ty Howle (Virginia Tech), Phil Trautwein (Florida), Marques Hagans (Michigan), Stan Drayton (South Carolina) and defensive coaches Jim Knowles and Anthony Poindexter (Tennessee) and Deion Barnes (South Carolina).
