SFA kicker Jacob Hand picks Texas Tech football in transfer portal

The Texas Tech football program lost a kicker to the NCAA transfer portal this month but now has someone to replace him.

Jacob Hand made 3 of 3 field goals this season for Stephen F. Austin — from 54, 56 and 48 yards. He announced his commitment to the Red Raiders on Saturday, Jan. 10. Hand, listed by SFA as 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds, was a redshirt sophomore this season.

Tech kicker Stone Harrington made 22 of 28 field goals this season and was a Lou Groza Award semifinalist. He has a year of eligibility left.

Upton Bellenfant made 6 of 6 field goals this season for the Red Raiders, but decided to transfer and signed on Friday with South Carolina.

Hand is the 15th player to commit to the Red Raiders from the transfer portal this cycle, a 15-day period that runs through Jan. 16.

What SFA transfer kicker Jacob Hand brings to Texas Tech football

Texas Tech football coach Joey McGuire, left, and associate head coach Kenny Perry against Oklahoma State in a Big 12 game Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025, at Jones AT&T Stadium.

Texas Tech special teams coordinator Kenny Perry has shown he’s quite willing to use more than one kicker, as he did with Harrington and Bellenfant this season and with Gino Garcia and Reese Burkhardt in 2024.

Harrington will be the clear incumbent next season, but Hand demonstrated a strong leg this year and can provide depth and competition. He made nine field goals in 2022, his senior season at Mansfield.
