Shelby High football product Adam Webber named Bradford Prep coach

All Adam Webber has known is winning. Now, the Shelby football product looks to start a winning tradition at a program of his own.

Webber was formally announced Jan. 29 as Bradford Prep football coach.

“Coach Webber is a young, innaovative, and passionate, faith-driven leader who is deeply committed to building championship programs by developing the whole athlete both on and off the field,” the Mecklenberg County-based school said in a prepared statement. “His approach centers on character, accountability and competitive excellence, ensuring student-athletes grow as players, teammates and young men.”

The move comes after three seasons as an assistant at Independence High in Charlotte, the latter as defensive coordinator. The Patriots finished with a 10-3 record, with the defensive unit allowing 15.8 points per game.

Winning is part of Webber’s pedigree, the 2014 Shelby High product helping the Golden Lions to NCHSAA state titles as a player (2013) and as an assistant coach (2019, fall 2021). He served four seasons as an assistant at Shelby before departing for Independence.

Webber played collegiately at Mars Hill and Greensboro College, graduating from the latter in 2019.

Shelby High School football players go through drills as part of their first day of football practice on Aug. 2, 2021.

Bradford Prep, located in the northwestern portion of Mecklenberg County, will kick off its first varsity football season this fall. It will compete at the NCHSAA’s 2A level and participate in Catawba Shores 2A/3A/4A, a league also featuring Christ the King, Community School of Davidson, Corvian Community, Lake Norman Charter, Langtree Charter, Lincoln Charter and Pine Lake Prep.

“The launch of our varsity football program represents more than the addition of a sport. It strengthens school culture, builds student leadership, and creates opportunities for growth and pride that extend far beyond the field,” said Bradford Prep High School Principal Billie Little. “Our new varsity football program will positively impact our students, staff, and community for years to come.  Coach Webber’s experience and leadership make him the perfect fit to build our varsity football program. We are excited for the future of the program and can’t wait to watch him build something special.”

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
