The NCHSAA 3A state championship football game on Saturday, Dec. 13, in Durham County Stadium between Shelby and Kinston quickly turned into an offensive outburst, and it didn't slow down. Shelby wound up with an 84-41 win after a championship scoring display the likes of which this state has never seen.
Near the end of the third quarter, Shelby took a 77-41 lead to trigger the running clock, and the teams had already combined for 118 points — setting an NCHSAA record for most combined points in a football state championship game.
Not since Raleigh High School's 117-0 win over Asheville in 1914 has a championship game seen so many points.
Kinston receiver and NC State commit Tyreek Copper also set a few individual records in the game, beating Sage Surratt's previous record of 2,104 receiving yards in a season and Mohamed Massaquoi's 32 touchdown catches.
