Sherrone Moore’s firing marks a rocky transition for Michigan Football

Michigan football spent several years wandering aimlessly not all that long ago. Following the retirement of national championship-winning head coach Lloyd Carr, Michigan cycled through two different regimes under Rich Rodriguez and Brady Hoke, with neither able to prop the program up to its former glory.
But Michigan found its guy with Jim Harbaugh, a well-respected NFL head coach who was returning to his alma mater with visions of great success. Although things got off to an underwhelming start, Harbaugh ultimately led the Wolverines to the National Championship in 2023 and their greatest period of success this century.
Harbaugh had restored the culture and level of play Michigan fans could be proud of. Even after he left for the Los Angeles Chargers, there was still some hope it all could be sustained since Harbaugh’s hand-picked successor was taking over.
But that all came to a screeching halt, with Sherrone Moore being fired on Wednesday after being found to have had an inappropriate relationship with a staffer. Michigan now finds itself searching for a new identity and leader once again.
Wednesday’s news represents rock bottom for a Michigan football program that has experienced its fair share of bad headlines the last few years. Make no mistake, Moore messed up big time and his current situation is not one to be taken lightly. It’s something he’ll have to carry with him for the rest of his career and its ramifications won’t stop with him losing his job in Ann Arbor.
One also has to consider the ripple affect throughout the roster and coaching staff as well, as the job security and status of countless coaches and players will be re-evaluated when a new head coach takes over the program.
Furthermore, the next few days will be critical for Athletic Director Warde Manuel. He’s earned plenty of good will with the work Dusty May and the men’s basketball program are doing right now, but May’s hire came on the heels of letting prominent coaches like John Beilein, Jim Harbaugh and Erik Bakich get away while hiring Moore and Juwan Howard.
Furthermore, and perhaps most importantly, he’ll be looking for a new head coach to take over a football program that’s dealt with scandal and violations galore over the past few years, with Moore’s cause for firing being the latest.
The ending of Moore’s tenure was necessary based on his actions in the short term, yet likely wouldn’t have been all that hard to predict in the long-term as he likely would’ve entered 2026 on the hot seat anyway. However, with Moore no longer on staff, Michigan’s ties to the Harbaugh era are merely hanging on by a thread with wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy, offensive line coach Grant Newsome and interim head coach Biff Poggi the lone major holdovers.
Although Michigan had its peaks during the Harbaugh era, it brought valleys as well, and the effects have lingered into the current day. It might be uncomfortable to think about for fans, but ultimately the best move for Michigan right now could be to distance itself from those still connected to the Harbaugh era in the hopes of bringing in a new voice and culture.
Harbaugh built something something special that looked like it could be sustained for the future even with a different man running the show, as evidenced by the team’s wins over Penn State, Maryland and Ohio State in 2023. The play on the field over the last two years showed otherwise, though, and Moore’s actions will prevent that from ever happening again unless it’s restored by someone from outside the program.
Continuity was the goal back in Jan. 2024, but it can’t be right now.
The days and weeks ahead will be tenuous for the athletic department as it seeks to find the right man to take the wheel of the ship. A university and program that like to tout what it means to be a “Michigan Man” will look for someone who represents the ideals well and will treat their position with the respect it deserves.
