Rhett Lashlee is looking forward to how No. 16 SMU gears up for its ranked matchup against No. 23 Louisville ahead of Week 3 this season.

Lashlee is going through the fifth year of his head coaching career with SMU. He has achieved considerable success with the program, leading them to the College Football Playoffs in 2024.

Lashlee appeared on ESPN for an interview in preparation for the Mustangs’ contest with Louisville. With both teams firm in the AP Top 25, the coach didn’t hold back on the stakes the game has.

“It’s a big conference game on the road. I think it’s one of two ranked games this week. So it’s a huge game, both in the national landscape and in the ACC. For us, we’re going on the road for the second time to start the season against a team that is really talented. I mean, these are the last two years we played them. We felt like they were as talented as anybody in the ACC. They’re definitely capable of winning the league and making a college football playoff run, and so to have to go into their place and win is a challenge,” Lashlee said.

“This game won’t define the season for either team, but it could be a launching pad for either one of us. And a lot gets going to get made of the quarterbacks, the offense, all that stuff. At the end of the day, we got two pretty good defenses that maybe aren’t getting the credit they deserved. I know their defense is really good. I like our guys; I think it’s going to come down to who can run the football, who can stop the run the best, and who can take care of the football.”
