SMU football was set to kick off its 2026 season at 7:30 pm ET on Monday night against Florida State. The game between SMU and Florida State was, however, delayed due to a power outage caused by surges throughout the stadium.

Now, SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee is talking about the delay, per Brett McMurphy of On3.

“We’ve waited longer than anyone else to play, another 30 minutes ain’t gonna hurt us,” Lashlee said.

SMU is the only team in FBS that hasn’t played a game yet this season. Florida State opened up the season in Week 0, defeating New Mexico State 34-17.

Currently, Florida State is attempting to make a fix to get the lights back on and play the game with limited technology. This would include limited coach-to-player communication, as well as the clock being kept on the field. If a fix cannot be made, the game could be moved to Tuesday.

The current goal is to kick off at 9:15 pm ET, and Florida State took the field just after 8:50 pm ET to begin warmups.

This is an ACC conference game, which could have massive ramifications in the conference. Florida State has a week off after the game before visiting Alabama in Week 3. Meanwhile, SMU will face UC Davis at home next Saturday, making a potential rescheduling difficult.

These two teams have played just once in their school’s history. That game was in September of 2024 in Dallas, Texas, and was SMU’s first-ever ACC game. They dominated Florida State, winning 42-16. They would go on to make the College Football Playoff that season.
