DALLAS – Kevin Jennings is putting together one of the most impressive statistical careers in SMU football history, and the national recognition keeps coming.
The Mustangs' senior quarterback was named Thursday among the final 15 candidates for the 2026 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, an honor recognizing the nation's outstanding upperclassman quarterback.

It's another significant achievement for Jennings, but it also arrives at an interesting moment for SMU's offense.
Despite a 4-1 record and a national ranking, the Mustangs managed just 218 total yards in last Saturday's rain-soaked 25-16 victory over Boston College.
For a program accustomed to putting up explosive offensive numbers, that performance raised some uncomfortable questions.
Fortunately for SMU, Jennings' season statistics tell a considerably more encouraging story.
The South Oak Cliff product has thrown for 1,588 yards and 14 touchdowns through five games, completing 117 of 156 passes for an impressive 75 percent completion rate.
He leads the ACC and ranks third nationally in both passing yards and passing yards per game, averaging 317.6 yards per contest. His completion percentage ranks fifth nationally.
Those aren't simply good numbers. They're numbers that put him among college football's elite quarterbacks.
Jennings has also rewritten several entries in SMU's record book.
He owns program career records with 9,297 passing yards, 742 completions, 9,925 yards of total offense and 81 touchdowns responsible for.
Among active FBS quarterbacks, Jennings ranks sixth in career passing yards, seventh in touchdowns responsible for and eighth in total offense.
That's an extraordinary résumé for a quarterback who has helped transform SMU into a nationally relevant ACC program.
But individual recognition doesn't guarantee offensive consistency.
Against Boston College, Jennings completed 20 of 30 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns. Persistent rain and wet field conditions contributed to a game in which SMU struggled to generate its usual explosive plays.
The Mustangs still found a way to win, demonstrating the kind of resilience that matters during conference play.
Now, with SMU enjoying an open weekend before hosting Virginia on October 17, head coach Rhett Lashlee has an opportunity to address those offensive concerns.
Jennings faces some high-profile competition for the Golden Arm, including Texas quarterback Arch Manning, Ohio State's Julian Sayin, Oregon's Dante Moore and Notre Dame's CJ Carr.
The award's winner will be honored December 9 in Baltimore.

Jennings has already secured his place in SMU history.
The bigger question is whether he can turn that individual brilliance into another championship-caliber season for the Mustangs.
