The SMU Mustangs continued on their winning ways, with a 23-13 victory over Virginia at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in a game that again showcased how the offense can look when it doesn't shoot itself in the foot.

The defense once again showed that it is capable of taking over the game and, when needed, can put an exclamation mark on proceedings.

But it also marked the second game we have seen the offense not only play well, but also not have a handful of self-inflicted wounds.

Kevin Jennings finished his day going 23 of 36 for 246 yards and 2 TDs while also rushing for 26 yards as well.

It was also the second straight game the Mustangs' offense didn't have a turnover as the unit is now playing complementary football with their defense now flexing their muscles.

And for head coach Rhett Lashlee, he had some unique praise for Jennings' performance.

"I thought this was one of Kevin's better games just because you look at the stat line, you okay, he threw for 200 and almost 50 yards, two touchdown and fourth down plays and throws," Lashlee said. "Was smart with the football obviously. Then I thought he did a nice job of just being a boring quarterback in a good way.

"Then when he had to be special, he was third down, fourth down to play to J. Hill for the touchdown. He really just played within himself and led the team and did a really good job."

Turnovers had been a huge problem for Jennings, and it often meant the defense was forced back out onto the field, and even sometimes facing a short field.

But with the offense being turnover-free in the last two games, the defense doesn't have to bail the offense out all too often.

Playing complementary football is the exact recipe this Mustangs team has to follow, and if it can sustain it for the rest of the season, then who knows where this team could end up.

Self-inflicted wounds have plagued this Mustangs team all throughout the season, but in the last two weeks, we are seeing exactly what this team can be when it doesn't get in its own way.

And for SMU fans, it looks good…really good.
