Social media in uproar as Notre Dame is above Miami and Alabama in the CFP rankings

The third set of College Football Playoff rankings was released on Tuesday night, and while Notre Dame was jumped, it still remained in the same ranking as last week.
As the No. 9 seed, the Irish would be on the road taking on the No. 8 seed, as of right now that would be the Oklahoma Sooners. They’re the same team that jumped Notre Dame, as any team in contention would love to be in the Sooners spot, comfortably in and hosting a game in the first-round.
That wasn’t what set social media on fire, it was the fact that Notre Dame was viewed as a significantly better team than Miami, who beat them in the opener. Social media had plenty of hot takes on this, along with the Irish being ranked above Alabama, another two-loss team.
Check out below some of the best social media reactions to Notre Dame’s placement in the third CFP rankings of 2025.

We got a bit of insight into how the committee is doing things this year, and they let us know that they think Notre Dame is a tier above Miami despite the Hurricanes head-to-head victory. Part of this has to be the eye test, as the Irish have gotten better and Miami has lost twice to unranked opponents.
Notre Dame ahead of Alabama surprised many
Biggest surprise of the night to me. https://t.co/4Uj386ClIv

A pair of ESPN writers thought the same thing, the Irish are above Alabama. The Tide have lost against Florida State and now Oklahoma, showing that the committee values good losses over average to bad ones.
Miami could complicate things for Notre Dame
The highlighted part below is what Hunter Yurachek is referring to as far as a Notre Dame-Miami comparison.

It will be interesting if Miami gets moved up into the same tier as the Irish, then all bets are off. It might be that both teams get in, or potentially just one of them. Some of it depends on how the ACC plays out, but right now the Hurricanes are two-games back behind leader Georgia Tech, who is ranked No. 16.
Nicole Auerbach saw this coming
Wrote this about Alabama vs. Notre Dame on Sunday. Had a feeling the committee would focus on the FSU loss all of the sudden. pic.twitter.com/ZL3Q40XGsn

I don’t think the focus is sudden, more that it has to come into play due to having a second loss. While Alabama was without it, they were viewed as more superior team than many, but the playing field evened out after the loss to the Sooners.
A great point for Notre Dame using last year’s data
Throwback to last year when Miami was 10-2 with losses to two unranked teams and missed the playoffs and OSU was 10-2 with a 1 point loss and a 3 point loss to good teams, hosted, and won the natty. https://t.co/9zy6nvIRO1

It is looking like the same thing might happen to Miami this year as it did last, this time with Notre Dame replacing Ohio State. I don’t think anyone would complain if the Irish had the same results as the Buckeyes.
