Oklahoma delivered in all the ways a team hosting a College Football Playoff game should, except for getting the win. The Oklahoma Sooners jumped out to an early 17-0 lead against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the College Football Playoff. And then, in the second quarter, disaster struck.
Oklahoma had scored on three consecutive drives after opening the game with a punt. They were moving the ball well. But then mistakes reared their ugly head, and the Sooners' lead was swallowed up like it was in quicksand over the remainder of the second quarter.
Alabama capitalized on Oklahoma's mistakes: A dropped punt by Grayson Miller and an interception return for a touchdown led directly to points that tied the football game and changed the complexion of the evening. Even though the Sooners had chances to stay in the game, it felt like they were struggling for every yard the rest of the way.
The Sooners had been living on the edge. They couldn't afford this type of game. A team that was really good on special teams throughout the season was let down by it in the loss to Alabama. Mateer was largely pretty good throughout the night, but the pick-6 was a killer. To add injury to insult, Tate Sandell missed a pair of late field goals that would have cut the lead to seven in the final few minutes.
It wasn't that the Sooners lost the game that was so surprising. Alabama's a good football team with elite talent on both sides of the ball. Losing was certainly a possibility. It was the self-inflicted way they lost the game that wasn't on the bingo card.
The Sooners are now 0-5 in College Football Playoff games and are the only team to blow 17-point leads, and they've done it twice. The Sooners haven't won a bowl game or playoff game under Venables, going 0-4.
Oklahoma showed marked improvement, but with an opportunity to make a deep run, the Sooners made too many mistakes and couldn't recover.
For the last time during the 2025 College Football season, let's see how social media reacted to the Oklahoma Sooners loss to Alabama.
This was the game
Pick six (7)
Blocked punt (3)
Missed FGs (-6)OOOOOF

Had been clutch all year
Oklahoma picked a terrible night to implode on special teams.

From the Second Quarter On
Wow. Sandell misses.
Just a terrible night all around for OU. Nothing went its way.

Just a bummer of an ending
Helluva season. Made progress. But the way it's going to end is going to leave a really bad taste in a lot of Oklahomans mouths. Another blown 17 point lead in the CFP. That stings.

Too Many Mistakes, but Lots to Build On
Can’t drop a walk-in TD, punter can’t drop the ball and can’t throw a pick six
Good season
All the chips in for 2026

Don't Love Making this History
Oklahoma is the only team in College Football Playoff history to blow a 17-point lead. That was the 2018 Rose Bowl.
Tonight, OU led Alabama, 17-0. It's 17-17 at halftime.

The Decision of the Season
Please do NOT gimme ANY excuses about Mateer and XRob. 100 out of 100 times take the 1st down and POSESS the ball. Rbs running 35 yard over routes is NOT ideal.
Fuhhhhhhhhhh are we thinking 🤦🏾♂️

What a Ride it was
That one hurt, but what a season. Really enjoyed this team. #HardToKill

Makes No Sense
OU losing special teams is maybe the biggest surprise of the night.
Devastating.

Story of the Game
For all you could say about the loss, it basically boils down to a couple things.
The #Sooners HAD to be dominant on defense and win on special teams. They weren't dominant defensively, and the special teams were bad.
And it just exposed OU's limited offense.

We All Love Tate
I love Tate Sandell.

Hard Truth
Oklahoma has never won a CFP game 😳 pic.twitter.com/PSQrAbKIVY

Brutal
Alabama's 262 yards are the 3rd-fewest yards by any team in a @CFBPlayoff win.

Tough Pill to Swallow
Brent Venables in his first 4 seasons as OU’s head coach:
6-7
10-3
6-7
10-3No postseason wins.
Say what you want, but so far we know what we are gonna get

Just how it goes
A lot of you need to hear this:
Sometimes, you lose a football game because a couple 18-22 year old kids make a mistake, it happens. Not every loss means coaches need to be fired or the sky is falling.
That loss sucks, but what a season for this team.
Boomer forever.
