Nebraska has begun a Heisman campaign for its starting running back. The school has launched a strong push to secure an invitation for Emmett Johnson to the Heisman ceremony in New York.

Johnson leads the nation in yards from scrimmage with 1,431, second in rushing yards with 1,131, second in receptions from a running back with 36 and fourth in total touchdowns with 14. The Minnesota native also leads the Big Ten in conference play with 115.0 rushing yards per game and 152.0 all-purpose yards per game.

He's the first Husker to have a 1,000-yard rushing season since 2018. Head coach Matt Rhule believes that Johnson deserves an invite to New York, as he told the media on Monday afternoon.

"I personally believe Emmett Johnson should be in New York as a Heisman candidate. I think he should be a Doak Walker finalist if not winner and I think what he’s doing is fantastic. I hope people appreciate seeing him. He’s a First-Team All-American."

Nebraska has a long history with the Heisman Trophy. The Huskers have had three winners in program history: Johnny Rodgers (Wingback – 1972), Mike Rozier (I-back – 1983), and Eric Crouch (Quarterback – 2001). The Heisman Trophy will be awarded on Saturday, December 13, at 7 p.m. CT and can be seen on ABC.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers (7-3, 4-3) retake the field on Saturday, Nov. 22, when they travel to Pennsylvania to face the Penn State Nittany Lions (3-6, 0-6) in Happy Valley. The kickoff time and TV network have not yet been determined.
