The losses just keep piling up for Matt Campbell and Penn State, who are now 0-4 in conference play.
The Nittany Lions showed signs of life early against Michigan and kept it close through the balance of the game. Penn State marched down the field with a methodical drive to open the game, but failed to find six points. The red zone struggles seemed way too familiar for some fans, and they proved to be red flags for what was to come.
The field goal Penn State settled for on this drive ended up being the only points from either team in the first half.
Penn State did, however, manage to finally force Kyle Whittingham to bench Bryce Underwood. The Nittany Lions’ defense played an impressive first half, pitching a shutout against the blue chip QB prospect.
Things mostly went downhill for Penn State after halftime, as backup gunslinger Tommy Carr started finally getting points on the board for Michigan. The Nittany Lions’ QB play, however, started to trend in the opposite direction.
Once Michigan finally walked away with the win, a bad taste lingered in Penn State fans’ mouths. Campbell had a chance to pick up his first big win as head coach, but the Nittany Lions failed to win an ugly game.
One positive spot in the loss was wideout Chase Sowell, who finished with 11 catches for 152 yards and a late touchdown. He got shaken up early, but battled back and was a key piece of any success the offense was able to muster.
