“Some Losses Are Better Than Some Wins”: Nick Saban Proposes Controversial Change To College Football Playoff Evaluation

Former Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban has called for changes in the College Football Playoff selection process on ESPN’s “College GameDay” show.
According to Saban, instead of looking only at the total number of wins (raw win totals), the selection committee should place greater emphasis on opponents’ strength and the schedule.

The ex-Alabama HC said the committee should create a better metric to evaluate “quality wins and quality losses” because “some losses are better than some wins.”
“I think what we’ve created now is a system of how many games you win helps you get into playoffs, and the playoffs become the barometer for the success of your program. We need a better metric to actually evaluate quality wins and quality losses,” Saban said. “Some losses are better than some wins,” Saban said.
The seven-time national championship-winning coach explained that simply counting wins leads teams to avoid playing strong opponents in September.
“Like last year, Texas lost to Ohio State. Is that better than them beating Texas State? I think there’s got to be some metric with the committee that evaluates those things a little better, so we get the best teams in the playoff”.

According to Saban, playing against strong teams improves players’ performance, a view Desmond Howard also shared, saying the best players want to play in big games.
“Great players want to play in big games,” Howard said. “To be the best, you have to beat the best. I don’t understand this whole philosophy of, ‘Well, we may not want to play this game because if we lose,’” Howard added.
Saban is of the opinion that a 9-3 team playing against 7 ranked teams earns more than an 11-1 team that has beaten just two ranked teams. He talked about introducing a system like the college basketball RPI model so that it can be seen who a team has played against. He believes that the best teams in the country should get a spot in the playoffs, not just the teams with the cleanest records.
Saban pointed out that there are 9 SEC teams in the AP Top 25, while the Big Ten has only three good teams. Meanwhile, the Big Ten has the last three national titles – Michigan, Ohio State, and Indiana.
