Sooners emerge as frontrunners for two elite 2028 OL recruits

Oklahoma Sooners' offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh might have his swagger back. The Sooners have put out several elite offensive lines under Bedenbaugh's tutelage. However, the team hasn't had the same dominant fronts recently.
The hope is that this changes this year as three freshman offensive linemen played a ton last year and are returning. All three have high upside. They also return center Jake Maikkula. But Bedenbaugh knows he has to stack elite recruiting classes to build depth and keep the offensive line strong in the future.
He did that in the 2027 class, as the Sooners arguably have the best offensive line class in the country. The Sooners have commitments from Kaeden Penny, Cooper Hackett, Isaac Coughran, Luke Wilson, Tyson Ross and Jaxson Lawler. Penny and Hackett are both five-star recruits.
But the staff isn't stopping there. According to Rivals recruiting expert Steve Wiltfong, Oklahoma is already making waves with two elite 2028 recruits.
Wiltfong reports that the Sooners are among the frontrunners for Joey Fleming, the No. 1-ranked interior offensive lineman in the country, alongside the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Clemson Tigers. Oklahoma is also making progress with Cannon Zubeck, who ranks as the No. 3 offensive tackle in the Rivals300. The early positioning with both prospects gives the Sooners a strong foundation as they continue building their 2028 recruiting class.
The early progress with Fleming and Zubeck shows Oklahoma isn't simply trying to fix its offensive line for the 2026 season. Bedenbaugh and the Sooners are building for the long term.
Oklahoma already has an impressive collection of offensive line talent committed for 2027, including two five-star prospects. If the Sooners can follow that up by landing elite players such as Fleming and Zubeck in 2028, the position could become one of the deepest on the roster.
That would be a major development for Brent Venables and offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle. Oklahoma's offense needs to make significant strides to become a legitimate national championship contender, and having a dominant offensive line would give the Sooners a much better chance of getting there.
